Roles of TOAH-NNEST
TOAH-NNEST roles in working with our members/ukaipotanga, Government and other key stakeholders include:
- National voice for the broad spectrum of specialist sexual violence service providers throughout the country, Māori and Tauiwi.
- Assistance with building the capacity and capability of service providers e.g. striving for sustainable funding, providing and supporting opportunities for professional development, sharing information and research, supporting relationship building and collaboration.
- Specialist advice and training opportunities to inform government policy, legislation, research, strategy and services regarding sexual violence.
- Partnership and collaboration with the government and other key stakeholders on specific sexual violence initiatives.
- Single access point for the government and other key stakeholders to consult and inform sexual violence service providers.
- Assistance for the government to better meet its Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations regarding sexual violence issues for Māori.
Membership
Organisations and individuals who qualify can become members of either of TOAH-NNEST’s two whare or houses, Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri or Tauiwi Caucus.

National Office
The contact point for all TOAH-NNEST work is the National Office in Wellington.

Liza Time Poutakawaenga - Ngā Kaitiaki Māori I enjoy working as a part of a treaty based organisation. The role is full of variety and so far no day has been the same. Overall the aim is to contribute to the Kaupapa of Ending Sexual Violence Together. I have worked in Government Departments for a number of years in a variety of roles. I purposely wanted to move into mahi that offered a different challenge and new learnings which led me here. While born and raised in Wellington my whakapapa extends across the North Island. My Dad was Nga Puhi and My Mum is from Mahia, Rongomaiwahine. I currently live in Wainuiomata with my husband and two energetic children. |

Miriam Sessa My role is to support the day to day operations of our National Office and ensure we are finding the best and most useful ways to support all our members. I enjoy being part of a Treaty based organisation and working alongside Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri colleagues. I have a background in Sexual and Domestic Violence Prevention and intervention in Aotearoa/New Zealand and in Italy. I was born in England and lived in Italy until my early 20s I then booked a ticket to New Zealand and never went back. I live in Auckland and am often in the search of waves to surf on the weekends. |

Catherine Sinclair Kaimahi – National Office My role is to support the work of TOAH-NNEST national office, Wellington. I am the office administrator and multitasking is a key element to this.

Rebecca Mitchell My role is to support the relationship between member agencies and National Office, across all of the Tauiwi sector and support the delivery of any Tauiwi Caucus projects. A little about me - I come from a small farming community near Timaru, I moved up to Wellington for uni and am now settled down in Stokes Valley. I have a cat called Jax and a lemon tree called Trish. Trish has never fruited, despite my best efforts (any advice is appreciated). I’m brand new to this sector, having come from a policy job in the private sector, so I have a lot to catch up on and learn. Working at an NGO for a good cause has always been the dream, so I am absolutely chuffed to be part of the team. Please let me know if you find yourself in Wellington with a few mins spare - I’d love to grab a coffee and a chat. |

Governance
The governance structure of TOAH-NNEST reflects the Te Tiriti o Waitangi-based partnership of the two whare or houses, Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri and Tauiwi Caucus.
The three-part structure enables Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri, the tangata whenua whare, to operate substantially within a Māori worldview, while ensuring that TOAH-NNEST meets its legal responsibilities.
- Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri and Tauiwi Caucus each govern their own specific affairs in keeping with their own worldviews and priorities. Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri governs within the nine guiding kaupapa of the framework Te Ohaakii a Hine. Governance of Tauiwi Caucus is through the society TOAH-NNEST Tauiwi Caucus Incorporated, and its objects, principles and values.
- The overall governance body of the national network is the Paetakawaenga, which has representatives from each whare.
- The Maimoa, or the charitable entity TOAH-NNEST Trust, has the ultimate responsibility for legal and financial matters. Trustees representing Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri and Tauiwi Caucus govern as the body Te Roopu Whakahaere.

Te Tiriti O Waitangi Relationship
TOAH-NNEST has a Te Tiriti O Waitangi-based structure with two whare or houses:
- Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri (all specialist sexual violence services from a kaupapa and tikanga Māori worldview)
- Tauiwi Caucus (all specialist sexual violence services from Tauiwi worldviews)
The whare work together on common issues, as well as autonomously in keeping with their own worldviews and priorities. When they work with the same people e.g. Government Ministers and officials, they provide complementary perspectives.
